HANFORD, CA (KMJ) – A 10 year-old child is dead in apparent murder-suicide at a home in Hanford.

Hanford Police held a press conference Monday afternoon, releasing more details.

Police Police Captain Karl Anderson said the suspect, 43 year-old Victor Gomes had supervised visitation rights of his son, Wyand Gomes.

Police said the father was reported to have suicidal thoughts in 2016 and went through a mental health process by the courts and was allowed supervised visitation with the child.

Gomes also surrendered a gun at that time and it was never returned to him.

The boy was with his father Monday, at the home Mr. Gomes shared with his parents.

“The child was with his father in the home, living with Mr. Gomes parents, when he had visitation his mother and father had to be there,” said Captain Anderson.

Capt. Anderson says officers were called to the house on West Cortner Street near Bryce Way just before 7:30 am

“The mother did not speak English, the mother called a relative to notify them of what she had found, the family member she called – called us,” said Capt. Anderson.

Police found Gomes had shot his son before turning the gun on himself.

The boy was rushed to Adventist Medical Center, Monday morning but died from his injuries.

Police say they don’t have any information what triggered or incited the shooting and are still actively investigating.
