FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Future journalists got a sample of the business from media professionals in the Central Valley.
Fresno City College held its High School Journalism Conference, Friday morning.
A variety of workshops at Fresno City College featured on-air broadcasters, radio anchors, public relations specialists, camera operators, people behind the scenes and in front of the microphone — offering advice and examples of their work in print, TV, radio and other related fields.
KMJ anchor Liz Kern was a presenter for the topic of “Creating News Stories for Broadcast and Radio” in Fresno City College’s Old Administration Building, Room 180.
Sanger High School student Jade Avila was one of about two dozen students in the session.
“I loved it, it like — I started out writing when I was maybe in 5th grade and coming here, I moved here in May from North Carolina, and we’re military, and I was inspired by you, guys, said Avila.
Avila wants to be a journalist, and said she took away valuable lessons.
“What spared my interest was when you said ‘create opportunities, be open to it” and I was like ‘that’s what I want,’ said Avila. “I want to be able to get to know people, I want to make connections, and memories, but also I want to give other people their information.”
Avila told Kern and KMJ Program Director, Blake Taylor, who was also in attendance, that she was interested in a career in radio, too.
They got her contact info, just in case.
