Governor Newsom Signs Bill Allowing Pay for CA College Athletes

(KMJ) – Governor Gavin Newsom uses an appearance on UNINTERRUPTED’s The Shop to sign SB 206 into law.

The bill, which passed the state Legislature with  bipartisan support, becomes the first law of its kind in the nation to allow college student athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness.

Newsom was joined by NBA star LeBron James and several former NCAA stars on the show to discuss signing this bill into law.   This bill has been opposed by the NCAA which says it erases the distinction between college and professional athletes.

SB 206 takes effect January 1, 2023 but does NOT apply to community colleges.
