FRESNO (KMJ) – Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer is asking the public to reserve judgement on a viral police body-cam video showing a police officer in a physical altercation with a teenager. That teen is now suing the city for excessive force.
Back in January, the Fresno PD MAGEC anti-gang team went to an apartment at 250 North Caleveras to conduct a probation search. What happened next was captured on body cam video.
“The video that I have reviewed, certainly raises concerns, and raises questions for me as a police chief,” Dyer said.
Police Chief Jerry Dyer says a scuffle ensued, between officer Christopher Martinez and 17-year old London Wallace. The chief says it’s not immediately clear what happened next, but Wallace was taken to the hospital.
“I have asked, directed the internal affairs unit to expedite this investigation for a number of reasons,” Dyer said.
Dyer says the 20 officers on-scene were wearing 40-body cams.
Internal Affairs investigators are reviewing the video. The officer in the video has been placed on desk duty.
