FRESNO (KMJ) – Governor Gavin Newsom has signed SB-27,  a controversial bill to force President Donald Trump to release his tax returns or face the prospect of not appearing on the 2020 California primary ballot.

California becomes the first state in the nation to make the release of tax returns a requirement for a ballot spot.

The “Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act” requires all candidates for president to submit the last five years of tax returns to the Secretary of State to be put online for public scrutiny.

President Trump has refused to release his tax returns in the past, and is expected to challenge the new law in court as being unconstitutional.

Newsom’s immediate predecessor, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a similar bill in 2017, constitutional concerns.
