SAN FRANCISCO, CA (KMJ) – Investigators say Tesla’s autopilot feature was not on during a crash in San Francisco that killed a Central Valley man, and injured his wife over the weekend.

The couple had been in a crosswalk on Sunday when San Francisco Police say a Tesla ran a red light.

Clovis resident Kelly Dean threw up her hands to shield her husband but 39-year-old Benjamin Dean died.

She survived and is at San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition.

During two separate fatal Tesla crashes in Florida, the auto’s self-driving system was activated.

San Francisco Police say in this case, the automation was not activated and the suspect – 21-year-old Kelsey Cambridge of Vallejo was behind the wheel of the rented Tesla.

Police say she was driving 15 miles over the posted speed limit when she ran the red light.

The Tesla was broad-sided by another car in the intersection of Taylor and O’Farrell and then struck the couple.

Cambridge was booked Sunday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and running a red light.
