FRESNO (KMJ) — Staff and faculty at Fresno State have been issued a new set of guidelines, billed the “Principles of Community.”
The unveiling came Wednesday morning during the Spring Assembly, which marked the start of the first semester of 2019.
“How we engage in our work to boldly educate and empower student success is powerfully shaped by you,” President Joseph Castro told the crowd inside the Satellite Student Union.
“Strong collaborative working relationships are vital to our individual and working success.”
The four pillars of the guidelines are:
- We are respectful
- We are kind
- We are collaborative
- We are accountable
Each section includes examples of how that goal can be achieved. Click here to read the principles.
“Those principles reflect our core values of discovery, diversity, and distinction, as well as our deep commitment to our mission to boldly educate and empower students for success,” added Castro.
But the President of Fresno State revealed that the Principles of Community are not considered policy and will not be enforced as such.
“Instead, these principles exemplify what we aspire to be.”
The move comes after national criticism was focused on Fresno State following the social media posts of Professors Randa Jarrar in 2018 and Lars Maischak in 2017. President Castro rejected calls to restrict employee speech, asking staff in August 2018 “where would we draw the line?” (click here to read more).
