Accidental Shooting Injures Girl – Sheriff’s Office Requesting Criminal Charge

MADERA (KMJ) — A nine-year-old girl has been shot in Madera County, and the owner of the home where it happened may be facing criminal charges.

The incident on Sunday took place in a home close to Avenue 7 and Road 21. According to Madera County Sheriff’s Office, deputies established that the victim and her five-year-old cousin were playing together when the younger child found a Ruger .22 caliber rifle and accidentally shot the older child in the back.

The injured girl was taken to a local hospital. She has been described as being in a stable condition.

The incident has been described as an accidental shooting, but an investigation has begun. Madera County Sheriff’s Office has forwarded its report to Madera County District Attorney’s Office and requested a charge of criminal storage of a firearm against the owner of the home.
