SACRAMENTO (KMJ/AP) — The Chair of the California Democratic Party has temporarily stepped down, following accusations of of sexual misconduct.

Eric Bauman’s leave of absence began Monday. It has been alleged that he sexually harassed and assaulted several people during party functions. The alleged victims have not been identified. An external organization has been drafted in to examine the allegation.

“The allegations are a serious concern,” said Chair of Fresno County Democratic Party Michael Evans. “I think the party has done the right thing in terms of hiring an outside organization to do an investigation.”

While on leave, Bauman’s position will be filled by Vice Chair Alex Rooker.

Evans revealed that he has been in contact with Bauman on issues pertaining to the Central Valley.

“We have worked with Eric here locally for a number of years. He has been very responsive to the Central Valley and rural areas throughout the state.

“I would certainly hope that the allegations are not true, but if they are I hope he will do the right thing and the party can move forward.”
