HANFORD (KMJ) — One suspect has been taken into custody and one Hanford Police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after an officer involved shooting in the city.

It comes after a call on Thursday, when officers were sent to an apartment close to Highway 198 and 11th Avenue. Lieutenant Greg Freiner said suspect Aaron Sanchez was inside, armed with a knife, and threatening his family. Officers attempted to use a taser to bring the 30 year old into custody, but added that it did not work.

“While they were trying to get the female and the children out of the house, the suspect was able to open a door where he was again confronted by officers. There was a brief struggle at which time one shot was fired,” said Lieutenant Freiner.

“The suspect was taken into custody. The shot that was fired did not strike the suspect and nobody was injured.”

Kings County District Attorney’s Office has been establishing the facts of the incident while the officer remains on paid leave. That is expected to be complete by Monday evening.

However, investigators said that the incident could have been far worse.

“There were statements made that once the officers got there, other things would happen. Oftentimes that does happen in these type of situations where somebody will say if the cops show up it’s going to get bad or something’s going to happen.”

Sanchez has since been booked into Kings County Jail. Charges included assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, exhibiting a deadly weapon, and child cruelty.
