CLOVIS (KMJ) — Visitors to the Clovis Rodeo, who may be tempted to have a few alcoholic beverages during this year’s festivities, will this year have a specific area for someone to drop them off or pick them up.

The parking lot beneath the water tower at Clovis Avenue and 5th Street will be designated for vehicles passing through, ahead of the event’s first day on Thursday.

The move is to keep the area around the grounds free from congestion, and is designed with both ride sharing services and taxis in mind.

“If we can get people to use Lyft, Uber, taxi cabs, use a friend, a designated driver, all the things that are available to us to not drive drunk – that’s what we’re looking for,” explained Clovis Police Chief Matt Basgall.

Chief Basgall said officers will be also be viewing the Clovis Rodeo from a number of new angles.

“This year one of the things that we’ve added is actually new camera systems at the rodeo grounds will be up and running.

“So that we can actually monitor situations from our dispatch center.”

Clovis Police will also be looking for those attempting to drive while drunk. A proactive patrol will be in place, and possibly a DUI checkpoint as well.
