SACRAMENTO (KMJ/AP) — The vote this week by Los Alamitos City Council to reject the so-called sanctuary state law is being described as the potential start of a wider rejection of the legislation.
“I think the cities and counties hopefully will step up and do the same thing that Los Alamitos has done and say that this is an unjust law and we need to protect the interests of our citizens, our constituents, and keep people safe,” explained State Senator Ted Gaines.
He said the death of Kate Steinle in 2015 highlights the problems in securing the borders.
“I think elected officials are figuring this out and saying ‘you know what, we don’t need to go down this path’,” added Gaines.
The State Senator is behind an effort to repeal SB54.
“Senate Bill 1219 is a bill that basically just overturns the Sanctuary State status of California…it was unconstitutional and we need to reverse that legislation and honor federal law.”
KMJ News reached out to the office of SB54’s author Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León for a statement, but did not receive a response.
