FRESNO (KMJ) — The Fresno Grizzlies will become the Zamunda Lions for one night only, to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie “Coming To America.”
The film sees Prince Akeem (played by Eddie Murphy), of the fictional African nation of Zamunda, rejecting his pampered life and traveling to New York. He finds work at fast food restaurant McDowell’s and attempts to find a wife as well.
“The Grizzlies pride themselves on not only celebrating the local Central California culture, but also celebrating and paying tribute to American pop culture in general,” explained Entertainment Manager Ray Ortiz during the reveal Thursday morning.
The tie-in on June 21st, to coincide with the game against Albuquerque, will also see McDowell’s making an appearance.
“Our concession stand has been re-branded for today, and will be that night,” said Media Relations Coordinator Paul Braverman.
“We have Big Micks and fries ready to go at the concession stand. McDonalds has the Big Mac – we have the Big Mick.”
