MADERA (KMJ) — One of the two suspects wanted in the Tackle Box Gas Station and Mini Mart robbery and murder has been arrested.

The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon by Madera County Sheriff’s Office, but Armitraj Singh Athwal was actually detained less than an hour after the incident Monday evening.

Athwal was taken into custody in Fresno County on a separate charge, but was later identified as the person being sought for the crime which took place on Road 26 just north of the City of Madera. Deputies also believe that the 21 year old was likely the suspect who shot and killed the store employee during the robbery (click here to read more).

“They stole cash and two large boxes full of cartons of cigarettes. Once they were done with that they fired several shots, one of which did strike the employee and killed him,” detailed Commander Bill Ward.

That employee has been officially identified as 20 year old Dharampreet Singh Jassar.

“Dharampreet was a completely innocent victim, just doing his job, when he was senselessly killed during this robbery,” said Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney.

The second suspect is still outstanding. He is described as wearing a black “Reebok” sweatshirt, black pants, black and white shoes, and a white bandana over his face.
