YOSEMITE (KMJ) — A red-flag warning has been issued due concerns that forecast storms could spark off new wildfires in the Sierra Nevada.
The advisement period is set for Wednesday between 1pm and 11pm.
“We do have some mid to upper level moisture, coming in from the south,” explains National Weather Service meteorologist Modesto Vasquez. “So we’re concerned for some elevated thunderstorms providing some dry lightning and could potentially increase the threat of fire starts.”
The combination of lightning, and gusty and erratic winds, could be all that is needed to set off some severe wildfires. The area considered to be most in danger is between Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park.
“That is the main concern for this afternoon,” continues Vasquez. “Hence a Red Flag Warning was posted…so any campers out there in the Sierra Nevada will need to keep a eye out for any thunderstorms developing.”
Those extending their July 4th camping stay in either Yosemite National Park or Sequoia National Park are also being advised not to start any outdoor burning. Officials warn uncontrolled fires there will likely spread rapidly through surrounding areas.
