Survey Respondents Question Origins Of Chocolate Milk

RIVERDALE (KMJ) — A survey of more than a thousand American adults finds 7% of respondents think chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

That result comes after questions submitted by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, in April of this year (via Food & Wine Magazine).

“It makes me sad that there’s that big of a disconnect,” reveals Donny Rollin with Fresno County based dairy Rollin Valley Farms. “That people wouldn’t know that cows don’t make chocolate milk. That has to be added.”

In fact, chocolate milk is both that color and flavor because of the addition of the ancient cocoa bean. The milk comes out the same regardless of the breed of cow.

“We do our best as an industry to try to educate people. There’s just a really big gap right now that keeps people believing things that are not true, and are very easily swayed by advertising campaigns and not based on any fact.”

Rollin adds that many people fail to understand the amount of efforts of the dairy industry.

“I would say you need to come out to our farm and I’ll show you how it works, because we have some brown cows on our dairy and all the milk is colored the same.”
