FRESNO (KMJ) — Fresno State sweet corn is now on sale, with hundreds of people gathering early Friday morning to be the first in the Central Valley to get their hands on some of the locally grown produce.
The crowd in front of the Gibson Farm Market was described as a “madhouse” by the first person in line.
“So you get here early, get your corn, get out of here, go home,” explains Stephen Webb, who arrived at 3.45am. “Throw it on the grill with a big thick steak. By 9 o’clock I’m going to be eating good.”
He reveals that the level of interest is the same every year.
“By the end of the day they’ll probably be sold out. I wanted to get out here and get my corn fix….it’s sugar on a cob. You can eat it raw, you can cook it, you can grill it, you can sauté it, steam it, boil it, make it in soups, make it in corn bread, you can even make ice cream with it, it’s that good.”
Customers can choose either the yellow or white variety; it’s 40c per ear of corn.
The Gibson Farm Market will have special weekend opening hours: 7am to 7pm on Friday, 8am to 6pm on Saturday, and 9am to 5pm on Sunday.
“We’re telling everybody it’ll be about a 12 week season. It’ll go a little longer than that, but for sure 12 weeks,” says campus farm manager David Sieperda.
“We’re going to have over three-quarters of a million ears ready for sale. So we’re going to be good.”
