Catholic Charities Open After Fatal Shooting in Parking Lot

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – In the aftermath of yesterday’s shooting, Catholic Charities – one of the shooting scenes – is open for business.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer confirmed on Wednesday that 58-year-old David Martin Jackson was shot and killed in the parking lot of Catholic Charities.  37-year-old Mark James Gassett was also a client at the charity – and was shot down the street.

“My heart is broken for the families, the victims, and what they’re going through right now.” said Kelly Lilles, Catholic Charities Diocese of Fresno Executive Director.  “We also feel bad for our team who witnessed [the shooting on Monday].  It was awful.”

Lilles says all of her employees and volunteers are safe and that they all decided together to open up today.

“One of our priests was here this morning,” said Lilles.  “And he said ‘Today is sunny.  It’s bright.  And we have to move on and to move forward.  And those victims would want us to do that.’  Catholic Charities was not targeted.  It just happened to be the space that this all took place.”

There is a memorial set up outside of the building, just a few feet away from where one of the shootings took place.
