FRESNO (KMJ) — Family members of Fresno County Correctional Officer Toamalama Scanlan, injured after last year’s jail lobby shooting, say they’re excited he’s out of intensive care.
Scanlan was severely hurt after the incident in September 2016, which also saw fellow Correctional Officer Juanita Davila injured as well. She has since been released from care, but his healing continues with a transfer to a facility in Texas.
“This week he’s heading into his third week of a rehabilitation program, at TIRR in Houston,” describes his cousin Jazmine Scanlan.
She says the focus now is to create scenarios where he can push his abilities and range of motion.
“Every single day he’s got a very robust schedule, they wake him up at 8.30 in the morning, they start at 9am. They go through lots of different kinds of therapy….music therapy, physical therapy in a gym. They’re certainly pushing him to the limit so that he can begin to rebuild his cognition and his function after the injury.
“He’s just doing an amazing job.”
The family has provided an address to mail encouragement directly to Toamalama Scanlan at the facility, but ask that only cards or letters are sent.
“No bulky or large items, definitely no perishable items,” adds Jazmine Scanlan. “We don’t want it to be a problem for the hospital but it’s certainly fine for letters and cards.”
