Poverello House Breaks Ground On “Raise The Roof” Project

FRESNO (KMJ) — A $2.5 million project to improve services at Fresno’s Poverello House, has broken ground.

The demolition effort on the old food storage building is scheduled to start this week, with an up-to-date 19,000 square-foot warehouse being built in its place. It’s all part of the “Raise the Roof” campaign, to bolster what’s on offer to help the city’s hungry, homeless, and destitute.

The new storage area is set to be built on the current site at 412 F. Street, and would be among other improvements to the site’s operations center and community housing.

“This project is phase one of the overall expansion of Poverello House,” explains Executive Director Cruz Avila during the event Tuesday morning. “The new state of the art facility will enhance the quality of life, services, and day to day operations for our community and those who find themselves in need.”

Officials hope to complete the development, billed “Raise the Roof” by site staff, by October 2017. Of the total $2.5 million needed, $1.7 million has been raised so far.
