FRESNO (KMJ) — A resolution detailing the protections offered to all students within Fresno Unified School District, has been unveiled.
The reveal Wednesday morning outside Roosevelt High School saw community activists, local politicians, and trustees all come together.
“We’re here today to clearly reaffirm our commitment and support to the students of Fresno Unified,” begins school board clerk Claudia Cazares.
“We want each one of our 74,000 students to know they are cared for, and their academic success, safety, and social emotional well-being is our number one focus.”
The resolution includes designating school sites, facilities, and equipment as safe places for students, families, and the community. It also establishes that Fresno Unified will not participate in any immigrant enforcement activities on any district properties, to the fullest extent the law allows.
“We will do whatever we legally can do to ensure [student’s] safety, and we will hold ourselves accountable, and you will help hold us accountable, for making them college and career ready,” says trustee Elizabeth Jonasson.
“We recognize that many of students have been suffering, but today we want to tell you clearly: you are not alone.”
The Fresno Unified school board will vote on the “Safe Place School District” resolution on March 8th.
