SACRAMENTO (KMJ) — A Central Valley State Senator publicly opposes a bill which would stop local law enforcement from referring undocumented immigrants to federal agents.
Those against the Senate Bill 54, proposed by Senate President pro-Tempore Kevin De León, fear it would turn California into a sanctuary state.
“Families in the undocumented community are particularly scared that De León’s actions will protect predators who prey on their children, the elderly, and other vulnerable folks in their neighborhood,” says State Senator Andy Vidak.
“It’s important that we distinguish between hardworking undocumented families, trying to make a better life for themselves, and their community, as opposed to hardcore violent undocumented criminals who should be deported and not dumped back into our communities.”
He warns that SB 54 will create a “real and present danger” unless it’s drastically amended.
Those in support of it feel it’s needed to protect individuals threatened by President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
