FRESNO (KMJ) — The Fresno Unified Board has voted to end Michael Hanson’s employment with Fresno Unified School District.
It was December 2016 when Hanson publicly announced that he would be leaving the position he’s held since 2005. He initially intended to continue his contract until August 2017 (click here to read more on that announcement).
But the development during Monday evening’s Fresno Unified Board Meeting saw that timetable sharply moved up.
“The board attempted to reach a mutually acceptable resignation date, but that did not prove possible,” announced Fresno Unified Board President Brooke Ashjian.
“Therefore, the board has made a decision to buy out the Superintendent’s contract and terminate his employment with the district effective February 1st 2017.”
In a 4-2 vote, with trustee Cal Johnson absent, the group made that collective decision.
“In the meantime, Chief of Staff Bob Nelson will be the acting superintendent pending appointment of an interim superintendent.”
Then the search begins to find an interim superintendent, and a permanent replacement.
Ashjian added that Michael Hanson will have his salary and health benefits paid for the next twelve months.
“So long as the superintendent immediately seeks other employment.”
I wish all students, families & staff @fresnounified the very best in the future. Proud of nearly 12 years of service to Fresno & Valley!
