FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — More than 8,000 phones have been smuggled into California prisons this year, according to the latest figures from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Cell phones are worth about $1,000 on the inside, and have been used for everything from posting selfies, to coordinating escapes.
In an effort to combat the problem, the state is rolling out a device known as Cell Sense.
The portable tower can detect cell phones, even if the battery is removed.
