Boxer Introduces Legislation to Abolish Electoral College

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Outgoing California Senator Barbara Boxer announced her intention to introduce legislation on Tuesday to try and change the voting process.

The Democrat with more than two decades of experience in the Senate said she will introduce legislation to eliminate the electoral college. That would allow the popular vote to determine the outcome of the Presidential election.

Democrats have been on the losing end in recent history – with Hillary Clinton most likely winning the popular vote this November and Al Gore winning the popular vote back in 2000. However, GOP candidates Donald Trump and George W. Bush wound up on top in the electoral college in those elections.

Trump will become the 5th President in U.S. history to lose the popular vote, but win the election.

Boxer said in a statement, “This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency.” She pointed out that Clinton is on track to receive more votes than any other candidate in history – except Barack Obama.

Boxer says she wants every American to be guaranteed that their vote counts. The amendment would take effect if it were ratified by three-fourths of the states within seven years after its passage in the U.S. Congress.
