FRESNO, CA (KMJ) –  Fresno is moving closer to having an aquarium.

A major milestone on the way to bringing fish to Fresno, the grading work was completed in September at the site along Highway 99 by the San Joaquin River.

“We’ve been preparing the site for the first building on the Fresno Aquarium property, and the first building will be the Aquaculture Building that’s where we will be raising all the fish, both freshwater and saltwater, that will eventually live at the full-blown Fresno Aquarium.” – Tom Lang, Executive Director, Aquarius Aquarium Institute.

The non-profit Aquarius Aquarium Institute is relying solely on cash and donations to develop the 10-acre property into a state-of-the-art 6,000 square foot aquarium without incurring any debt.

So far, “From the Ground Up,” the Aquarium’s capital campaign has sold over 1500 concrete blocks since September.

“Concrete blocks are our current fundraiser called “From the Ground Up.” We are literally building on the ground with concrete – they call them concrete masonry units. and they are small blocks for $100 dollars and the large blocks are $200.

Their goal is raise $730,000 to bring the fish to Fresno.
