FRESNO (KMJ) — Monday November 7th marks the final day before the nation goes to the polls. Here in the Central Valley, both sides are sure their team is going to succeed.
“Well I think Hillary Clinton is doing extremely well”, says Chair of Fresno County Democratic Party Michael Evans. “We’ve seen these polls go all over the place, I find it difficult to believe there’s anyone who didn’t make their decision weeks or even months ago”.
He’s confident of a victory for the Democratic Party as much as his opposite number is confident of a victory for the Republican Party.
“If you compare it to 2012, with Romney, we’re doing across the board much better”, reveals Chair of Fresno County Republican Party Fred Vanderhoof.
“It looks like we’re going to pick up states like Michigan, possibly Pennsylvania, that are normally blue states”.
The final hours of both the Clinton and Trump campaigns have seen the candidates dashing across the country in order to convince any wavering voters. But the ballot isn’t just to decide which presidential candidate to back, there is an awful lot more there too.
Decisions still need to be made regards propositions, as well as federal, state, and local representatives. One of the closest local battles is that to replace termed-out Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin.
“The most important race we have right now, locally here in Fresno County, is the mayor of Fresno”, explains Vanderhoof.
“Some people say the mayor of Fresno is as important as a congressional race and so that looks like a very close race between Lee Brand and Henry Perea”.
The other side is confident about their candidate’s success, anticipating that, for the first time in 23 years, Fresno will have a Democratic mayor.
“Henry Perea is running a strong campaign in the mayor’s race, I think he’s going to benefit from the national trend as well”, says Evans.
The polls open at 7am the morning of Tuesday November 8th.
