UPDATE: The FSO deputy has been released from the hospital.
FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A Fresno County Sheriff’s Deputy is at CRMC after he accidentally shot himself on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred while the deputy was on duty – near a warehouse near Church and Gearhart avenues in southeast Fresno. FSO says the deputy is with the MAGEC team, and was adjusting his leg holster when gun went off.
“That bullet struck him in the leg,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Botti. “The indications are that he is going to be okay. So of course we’re very grateful that this wound doesn’t look to be too bad and he should be on his way to healing sooner rather than later.”
This is the second accidental shooting involving the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office this week. The first took the life of Sgt. Rod Lucas. He died when a detective’s gun went off at a Sheriff’s Office facility.
“Hearing this news hits you pretty hard because obviously we had this earlier with Sgt. Lucas at the beginning of the week,” said Botti. “Accidental discharges are extremely rare and to have two in one week, obviously even more so.”
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, and will be looking to see if any department procedures regarding firearms need to be changed.
