FRESNO (KMJ) – Fresno police are investigating the circumstances after a car crashes Friday afternoon in Downtown Fresno.
At 12:49 pm, officers responded to a call of a vehicle that collided with a traffic signal pole at Ventura and Hazelwood.
Shortly after receiving the initial call, Dispatch provided an update there was a shooting victim in the crashed vehicle.
Officers and EMS found a 31 year old Hispanic male sitting in the drivers seat of a Chrysler 300 that collided with the traffic signal light in the median of Ventura Avenue and Hazelwood.
The man from Oxnard, was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his hip, and claimed he was accosted and shot by one of by three young Hispanic men at a gas station.
Police say his story didn’t match up with his wound, and they believe he accidentally shot himself.
Patrol officers on scene asked to search his car and he said ‘no.’
He was rushed to CRMC in stable condition.
Police theorize that the shooting was accidental and the driver disposed of the gun prior to losing consciousness causing him to leave the roadway and crash into the pole.
He has an outstanding out-of-county warrant for possession of a sawed-off shotgun.
His vehicle was impounded and Street Violence Section detectives are further investigation the shooting.
