Heat/Poor Air Quality Postpones Valley Events

heat FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Due to the poor air quality and the heat, a few Valley events have been canceled or postponed.

Friday night’s United Way Backpack Giveaway has been postponed because of the poor conditions outdoors. The event gives 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to kids whose families can’t afford them. Afterwards, a movie is shown at Eaton Plaza. Fresno Parks Director Manuel Mollinedo says that event at Eaton Plaza has been re-scheduled to Friday, August 12th. The United Way will also have a backpack giveaway event in Madera on Friday, August 5th.

The Old Town Farmer’s Market on Friday night has also been canceled. This is the first time in 27 years the festivities has been canceled. The Farmer’s Market is expected to return next week.

Thursday night’s “Rock the Mall” at the Sierra Vista Mall was also postponed.

Fresno city pools are open through the weekend, as are cooling centers.
