FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Governor Jerry Brown’s “By-Right” housing proposal is getting some local support.  Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin threw her support behind the plan, which seeks to reduce barriers and delays in developing affordable housing throughout California.

The plan would allow local governments to give administrative approval of new, multi-family housing developments that are consistent with existing local planning, building, and zoning regulations.

“The path that [Fresno] has been on for decades now has resulted in some of the highest concentrations of poverty and some of the worst environmental consequences of any other large city in the United States,” says Swearengin.  “We are seeking to remove every barrier from investing in our city and particularly in neighborhoods that have not seen new investment for decades.”

Swearengin says there’s still issues to be resolved, and encourages all sides to get together to iron out the issues of implementation.  She says Fresno already adopted the plan locally last December when they updated their city-wide development code.
