FRESNO (KMJ) — The torch run for the Special Olympics of Northern California is coming through Fresno County, and they need help to make sure it gets the welcome it deserves.
The run is taking place on Thursday, but a whole crowd of people are required to make its presence known and help raise money so that the competitors in the Special Olympics can take part.
“Between the athletes, local law enforcement, and the volunteers, there’s probably going to be roughly a hundred”, says Fresno County Sheriff’s Detective Fred Henson.
But they’re looking to encourage as many volunteers as possible, to help raise as much money as they can for the competitors taking part in the events at UC Davis on June 24th.
“So the run is $25, we raise money through that. You get a t-shirt in the run”
The route is set to involve some of the major thoroughfares of Fresno, and will be starting at the city’s Chukchansi Park. The run is open to public participation, and advice is to sign up soon.
“You can go online and look at Special Olympics in Fresno and it’ll direct you to the torch run, and you can donate there”.
The plan is to meet at the stadium at 7:00am for early registration and 7:30am for a brief presentation about the Torch Run. The Torch Run will begin at 8:00am sharp and is projected to end at about 10:00am at the 500 Club and Casino in Clovis.
“They can come sign up the day of and join the run”, continues Detective Henson. “It costs us roughly $350 to sponsor an athlete for the year, and we’re hoping to raise a minimum of $5000”.
