CRITERIUM

The City of Merced is preparing for the 29th Annual Original Merced Criterium Bicycle Race, on Sunday.

Fans are expected to out on the streets as bicyclists will be running closed circuit laps around the Courthouse.

“The streets get lined with people who end up watching and cheering them on.” – Mike Conway, Asst., Merced City Manager.

Mike Conway says it’s a positive for the city coffers; “It does draw a lot of fans from the area around there, who come and they buy their gas get a lot of food, things like that.”

And the racers add to economics of the event.

“It gets a certain amount of boost for the hotels and motels – from the racers themselves, Friday night, there is a definite boost.” – Mike Conway.

Some of the streets in Downtown Merced are going to be closed Sunday, February 21st, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the race.
