Police Chief Jerry Dyer plans to expand the department’s ShotSpotter technology.
“We now have 3 square miles, Fresno Unified has agreed to add another square mile in the budget or two that would give us 5 square miles and the goal is to get up to 10 – 12-square miles in our city in the next year or two.” – Police Chief Jerry Dyer.
There are ShotSpotter sound detection monitors placed in key high-crime areas in Fresno,
“So that our officers can respond very quickly, very timely, bring aid to victims, locate shells casings, identify and arrest suspects.
Within about 30 seconds – police can pinpoint the gunshot location, find shell casings within about 8 to 10 feet from where the shot spotter technology is placed.,, and Police Chief Dyer is hoping to increase that coverage.
2015 year-end numbers showed an increase in shootings over 2014.
Last year, there was one shooting a day that ended in a car, person or building being hit.
Dyer paid for the first 3 miles of ShotSpotter with grant money and hopes to secure additional funding to pay for an additional 7-square miles.
