(KMJ) – FRESNO, December 16TH, 2015 – The California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary was in Fresno, on Wednesday, with Karen Ross taking part in the celebration of “Farm to Food Bank Month” by visiting the Community Food Bank in Fresno.
She shared a story of how a group of farmers realized how far reaching an effect our Valley’s donated harvest has – when they visited a food bank in Ohio:
“The folks at the food bank were so concerned about what was happening with the drought in California because they had gotten so accustomed to getting beautiful fresh California grown produce, and it just really struck those farmers of how their work touches people that they will never get to see.” – Karen Ross, CDFA Secretary.
Ross credits the farmers and the food banks for the huge donations they are able to contribute to help feed the nations’ hungry.
California farmers have donated 150 million pounds of food to food banks.
Fresno’s Community Food Bank has handed out 17-million pounds of fresh grown produce and are hoping to more than double number over the next few years.
