VIDEO: Madera Woman Freed After Getting Lost In Underground Canal

MADERA (KMJ) — A Madera woman is doing well after being rescued from a large water drainage pipe Sunday morning.

She told firefighters she’d been stuck in the underground canal for at least a day. She’d entered the pipe, near Martin Luther King Junior School, after wandering into another access point nearly a mile away. She then apparently lost her way.

Madera Police say it serves as a reminder that people should stay away from canals, which can frequently and unexpectedly flood.

The woman was uninjured in the incident, which saw CalFire crews forced to cut bars off the drainage area in order to free her.
