EDC

Fresno County extends a 12-million dollar welfare to work program finding success in the valley.

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors voted 5 more years for the EDC’s program – waiving the competitive bidding process.

About 9000 clients have been placed in jobs through the non-profit Economic Development Corporation which partners with companies to train clients.

John Lawson, owner of Rock & Oil, Inc., provides a network of truck driving jobs for drivers and owners – working with the EDC, he gets about 80 or 90 people training to be truck drivers – especially females.

“The women I get are the best truck drivers, they show up on time they’re interested, it pays $800 to $ 1000 a week, for $800 to $1000 a week, you don’t need public assistance.”

Going forward, the EDC estimates increasing from 2.5% success rate to a 10% success rate getting a job,,, based on the Federal Welfare To Work program.

The County’s multi-million dollar agreement with the Economic Development Corporation includes job creation, marketing, subcontracted training, and website updates and maintenance.
