Calif. Obesity Rate Still Climbing

(KMJ)   California’s waistline is expanding again.

According to a report released Monday, The Golden State’s obesity rate was 25% in 2014, the fifth-lowest rate in the US.  Researchers at Trust for America’s Health say that’s an increase of 1% from 2013 and up 6% since 2000.

Arkansas has the highest obesity rate at 35%.

“Efforts to prevent and reduce obesity over the past decade have made a difference,” Jeffrey Levi, executive director of Trust for America’s Health, said in a statement.

“Stabilizing rates is an accomplishment. However, given the continued high rates, it isn’t time to celebrate. We’ve learned that if we invest in effective programs, we can see signs of progress. But we still haven’t invested enough to really tip the scales yet.”

The study also found that compared with 1960, Americans are more than 24 pounds heavier today.
