FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The California Assembly has passed legislation, which would allow high school seniors to graduate without taking the exit exam, as long as they’ve fulfilled all other obligations.

Thousands of students needing to complete the requirement this summer, discovered that the state contract to administer the test, had expired.

The Department of Education has been preparing to shift to a new exam, which will be more aligned with current standards.

Administering the old test would have cost around $2 million, and the department was counting on the lawmakers to act more quickly, on a separate bill to suspend the requirement.

The newly-approved bill, which has drawn bipartisan support, heads to the Senate for a final vote, before going to Governor Jerry Brown.
