A man who tried to steal a car belonging to an off duty prison officer Friday morning probably didn’t expect what happened next.

It all started in a fast food parking lot on First and Tulare in Southeast Fresno. The victim says he was approached by the suspect as he was leaving the restaurant – and then the suspect tried to take his car. The two then got into a fight.

“The victim was able to break away”, says Lieutenant Joe Gomez. “He’s armed of course because he was a law enforcement officer, he’s able to get the suspect on the ground at gun point and hold him there.

“As that happens the guard is able to call Fresno PD”.

Unfortunately the suspect made a break for it, grabbed the car keys, and drove away. But a witness saw what happened and decided to do something about it.

“He watches this whole thing go down”, continues Lieutenant Gomez. “He chases the suspect and the victim’s vehicle and he cuts the victim off”.

That’s when Fresno PD arrived and the suspect, Adrian Cerkueira, was taken in. He’s been booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of carjacking and robbery.
