SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California drivers are getting a taste of history as the state starts to reissue its black license plates, which were originally issued in the 1960s.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1Gyvn6w ) the Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that it will start handing out the black plates reminiscent of the ones issued from 1963 to 1969.
State Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Glendale, introduced the California Legacy License Plate Program because many car enthusiasts with respect for old-model rides connect the classic vehicles to the black plate.
The only difference with these plates is that they will be sprayed with a clear coating that will allow them to be seen at night.
The reissued plates, which cost $50, have been the fastest specialty plates ever to reach 7,500 pre-orders.
