House Votes to End Country of Origin Meat Labeling

House Agriculture chair Mike Conaway told colleagues on the house floor before the vote that mandatory country of origin meat labeling is a failure.

And after 13 years of debate and four negative World Trade Organization rulings, it’s time to end cool.

The final WTO decisions ruled that cool discriminates by requiring segregation of livestock from Mexico and Canada.

The WTO rulings give Canada and Mexico the right to retaliate with billions in tariffs this summer.

Canada announced plans for 3-billion dollars in duties against U.S. meat and produce, with Mexico close to 700 million dollars.

Recent USDA studies show consumers pay little, or no attention to country of origin labels.

Instead, consumers look at price and meat quality.
