FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) – There are 50 thousand Armenians living in the Fresno area and the City of Fresno has renamed a street downtown to reflect Fresno’s Armenian roots.

Santa Clara Street between O Street to Van Ness Avenue has been renamed to Armenia Street.

Rob Saroyan was the master of ceremonies for the unveiling held at Holy Trinity Church, downtown.

More than 100 people attended the street dedication.

“This “M” Street corridor is where the birthplace where Armenian immigrants really established themselves..and so this is a way to really join other great cities of the world Berlin, Prague, Rio de Janerio, Buenos Aires, all designated landmark to note where Armenians made a different in their community and under the mayors leadership we were able to establish the same recognition. – Rob Saroyan

Mayor Ashley Swearingen joined other dignitaries including the Honorary Consuls of the Republic of Armenia – who say the sign is a tribute to the Amenian community and a reminder to never forget the nightmare of the 1915 genocide on its 100th anniversary.
