FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) – Wawona Middle School students, staff and community members celebrated Earth Day by planting 24 Valley Oak Trees around the perimeter of the school’s athletic field.
As part of the project, Tree Fresno was teaching students how to plant and care for the trees, and about the legacy of the Valley Oak, native to the San Joaquin Valley.
These type of drought tolerant trees will flourish in low water conditions.
The idea came from Wawona neighbor David Roberts, who would like to see more schools do the same – and leave a legacy for the students.
The fundraising was first launched in March, attracting supporters from across the nation, including a donor from Boston, who was a member of Wawona’s first graduating class in 1958.
The school has raised nearly 33-hundred dollars, surpassing the goal of $100 a tree.
