FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has added two new members to its K-9 team.

Mikey, a 3-year-old Dutch Shepherd, and Max, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, are undergoing intense training with their handlers.

The Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit requires 240 hours of training, which adds up to about 6 weeks.

Deputy Robert Mehling is one the newest members to the team and says he and Max are inseparable.

“I go to work, it’s 10 hours there; I go home, he’s there,” Mehling said. “The bond’s really good just like a bond with your own personal pet.”

On Wednesday, the new canines practiced doing building searches.

A total of nine dogs are on the team, three of which that are dual trained and certified as explosive detection canines.
