Kamala Harris Says She’s Running For Boxer’s Senate Seat

SAN FRANCISCO (KMJ) — California's Attorney General is the first person to put her name forward for Barbara Boxer's soon to be vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Her announcement was made Tuesday morning via her website. In her declaration she says she's asking for more grass roots support to help bolster her campaign.

Harris, a former two-term San Francisco district attorney, is a personal friend of President Barack Obama. She was elected the state’s chief law enforcement officer in 2010 – and has focused her crime-fighting efforts on cross-border gangs which she says are increasingly engaged in high-tech crimes.

She attracted increased attention when she helped negotiate a national bank settlement with major mortgage lenders and secured extra funding for California.

But there could be competition afoot for the role: former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and billionaire Tom Steyer are also reportedly considering bids for the seat.

Some political analysts have also connected Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin to the position.
