FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno Chaffee Zoo announced Wednesday that a California Sea Lion died over the weekend. Catalina, an 8-year-old sea lion, died on Saturday after zoo keepers found the animal unresponsive in the sea lion cove. The Chaffee Zoo says CPR was performed, but to no avail. A necropsy was performed, and results show Catalina died of Valley Fever, which is not contagious.
Catalina had come over to the zoo from the Fort McArthur Marine Mammal Center. She had survived a shark attack that damaged her flipper, which meant she couldn’t survive in the wild.
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo says this is the second major animal death at the zoo this year.
